This role requires someone who is highly independent, hands-on, and proactive. Someone who identifies and addresses issues without waiting for direction and can confidently advise ownership on livestock, land, and equipment decisions. This is a lifestyle role, not a traditional fixed-schedule position. Expect a minimum of eight hours per day, with longer days and increased demands during calving season and other critical periods. The ranch is already a substantial operation, and ownership is looking for someone they can fully trust to ultimately take the lead, including overseeing additional ranch staff. The right person may be ready for that responsibility from day one, but advancement will be based on demonstrated judgment, reliability, and trust, not on waiting for the operation to grow into the need. Responsibilities -Manage the health and care of the cattle breeding herd along with goats, sheep, and chickens, including preventative and responsive care. -Maintain accurate records of births, vaccinations, illness, and treatment, including registry filings for the breeding herd. -Independently diagnose and treat the large majority of animal health issues, involving a veterinarian only when necessary. -Market and sell animals to ranchers and breeders, including new breeding programs as they’re introduced. -Manage pastures and hay production, including rotational grazing, invasive species control, and herbicide and fertilizer application. -Operate and perform routine maintenance on ranch equipment, including tractors with implements, hay equipment, and specialized machinery. -Complete required daily reporting and maintain the ranch’s internal tracking system with current, accurate information. -Support pecan orchard maintenance and harvest as that operation continues to develop. -Coordinate contract labor and specialists such as artificial insemination technicians and veterinarians as needed. -Advise ownership on animal, land, and equipment decisions and strategy. Required Qualifications -Proven experience managing a cattle herd, ideally within a registered or seedstock breeding operation rather than a commercial or stocker enterprise. -Demonstrated success marketing and selling livestock to ranchers and breeders. -Strong, hands on animal health knowledge, comfortable independently diagnosing and treating most common issues. -Comfortable and safe operating tractors, hay equipment, and other ranch machinery. -Physical ability to work outdoors in varying weather, including Texas summer heat, and to lift and move heavy loads such as hay bales and equipment. -Willing and able to obtain a Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide/Herbicide Applicator’s license, if not already held. -Self starter who works well independently with minimal oversight. -Proficient with MS Office and comfortable learning and maintaining an internal recordkeeping and reporting system. -Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred, not required for a candidate with strong hands on experience. -Willing to undergo background screening process, understanding that the exact worksite location will not be shared until late in that process. -Genuine interest in eventually leading additional ranch staff, once ownership can fully trust you in that role.
