Hickory is a 12-year-old Grade Quarter Horse gelding standing 14.3 hands tall and dressed in a beautiful dun roan color. He’s the definition of a no-frills, no-drama kind of guy—quiet, gentle, uncomplicated, and just plain EASY to have around.

Around here, Hickory has earned a very important job.

When friends or family come over and say, “I’ve never really ridden before, but can I go with you?” Hickory is usually the first horse I reach for. 😂 He’s patient, steady, and has that naturally slow and easy way of going that lets his rider relax and actually enjoy themselves.

Hickory has a background as a ranch horse and has done all kinds of everyday ranch work. More recently, he’s spent his time doing what he does best—packing riders of all experience levels down the trail.

Under saddle, Hickory is about as uncomplicated as they come. He carries a naturally low head, has an incredibly easy one-hand neck rein, moves nicely off leg pressure, and is content to travel slow and relaxed. He’ll walk, trot, and lope in the arena and doesn’t need to be ridden every day to remember his job.

That’s the beauty of a horse like Hickory.

Ride him regularly, and he’s happy.

Let him sit while life gets busy, saddle him back up, and he’s still Hickory.

He’s also had ropes thrown off him, carries a flag, and has been loped through the barrel pattern. He’s not trying to convince anyone that he’s the next world champion barrel horse—he’s just happy somebody invited him to participate. 😂 Whether it’s a play day, arena riding, ranch work, or a relaxing afternoon on the trail, Hickory’s answer is usually, “Sure, we can do that.”

And he’s just as easy when the saddle comes off.

Hickory is a complete gentleman for handling, tying, tacking, loading, bathing, the veterinarian, and the farrier. He’s the kind of horse that makes the everyday parts of owning one enjoyable instead of turning every simple task into a project.
