This operation runs approximately 3,000 mother cows across roughly 120,000 acres of big, rugged country and farms around 5,000 acres of feed ground, growing corn, triticale, peas, barley, and alfalfa to support the cow herd. The right candidate should be ready for a full, hands on year of cattle and farm work in wide open country. What Sets This Opportunity Apart A stable, long tenured crew, with two hands who have been on the place since 2001 Quality housing including a spacious six bedroom home, with all electricity, gas, propane, and heat paid by the ranch A strong benefits package including health insurance, a retirement plan with a company match, and a beef allowance for the household Newer, well maintained equipment, mainly John Deere, with a full time and a part time mechanic on staff so this role is not carrying heavy mechanical responsibility Horses fed and cared for at no cost, geldings only A genuinely family friendly culture where kids are welcome to be involved in branding, haying, and other ranch work A quiet, steady, hard working crew culture built around dependability and getting the job done Responsibilities Feed cattle out on range through the winter months using a mixer truck and a tractor pulled mixer wagon, following a nutritionist formulated ration Assist through calving season, which runs from early April to mid June, including moving pairs and doctoring as needed Build and maintain fence using a side by side or four wheeler, an ongoing priority given the size of the operation Rope and drag calves during branding season, which runs from roughly mid May through early July Support haying and swathing, and drive truck or tractor during silage and corn chopping Move cattle from pasture to pasture across large, remote pastures using horses or four wheelers Doctor cattle from horseback or with a dart gun as needed Handle general ranch upkeep including corral building, water line repairs, hauling salt and mineral, and equipment washing Participate in the ranch’s busiest stretch of the year each fall, including weaning, shipping, pregnancy checking, and moving cattle in and out of the feedlot Haul cattle locally using trucks, pickups, and trailers Handle day to day tasks as they arise on a working ranch of this scale, including general repairs and equipment care Work safely and efficiently across very large, remote pastures, some more than five thousand acres and ten miles from the nearest trail Qualifications Prior ranch or farm experience, ideally with commercial cow calf cattle Comfortable and competent on horseback Comfortable moving cattle using four wheelers and side by sides Solid fencing skills and willingness to take real ownership of fence quality Comfortable driving a semi is a plus Basic mechanical aptitude is helpful, though not essential given dedicated mechanics on staff A dependable, low drama, hard working personality that fits a quiet, close knit crew Willingness to live and work in a very remote setting, roughly twenty miles from the nearest small town Long term intent.
