Description:
La Bar Livestock LLC is looking for a Grazing Manager to run the day-to-day grazing and irrigation on a 1,800-acre irrigated and dryland lease in Gallatin Gateway, Montana along the Gallatin River, about 16 miles outside of Bozeman. Full-Time, Seasonal (April – October); Year Round Potential. This is a high-labor, high-reward grazing unit for someone who loves the complexity of moving cattle on irrigated farmland in a northern environment and who wants to leave the land, the wildlife, and the riparian areas better than they found them.

Currently we graze roughly 700 yearling steers and heifers from May-October. This is a mix of custom grazed cattle and owned cattle that are grazed with Adaptive Multi Paddock (AMP) grazing principles. We are generally moving cattle every 1-3 days, sometimes twice per day, depending on our goals and objectives.

The lease is located on a larger 100,000-acre working ranch, so you will have the support of their operations team and a returning summer intern. Our owner is stepping into a managing partner role at another ranch, which makes this position the on-the-ground backbone of the Gallatin operation. You will run the place day to day and work from a weekly plan rather than a daily task list, with regular support from the owner both remotely and onsite. One thing worth saying up front: this is ranching on the edge of a growing city. It is not the middle of nowhere, and for the right person that is part of the appeal.

Areas of Responsibility

- Monitor herd health and handle daily husbandry across owned and custom-grazed cattle

- Execute adaptive multi-paddock grazing moves on the seasonal plan with electric fence

- Manage irrigation (2 pivots and 2 wheel lines) to keep planned forage on track

- Keep fence and infrastructure in good repair, including virtual fence if we adopt it

- Monitor pasture and forage, and adjust the plan to protect gain and residual targets

- Keep IMI Raise Well records and investor reporting current and audit-ready

- Operate and maintain equipment (ATV, truck, skid steer, and horses)

- Bring your input to weekly planning and coordinate with the owner

Required Qualifications

- Hands-on experience with adaptive multi-paddock grazing and electric fence, ideally in a custom grazing or day-rate setting, with single herds up to 700 head of yearlings

- Strong interest in regenerative agriculture practices and low input ranching systems

- Irrigation experience with pivots and wheel lines

- Strong stockmanship and health judgment, including breeding-season protocols like bull turnout, health checks, and preg-check prep

- A self-starter who can run the operation independently once trained, and who communicates well with landowners, cattle owners, and teammates

- Someone comfortable ranching near a growing city

Preferred Qualifications

- Interest in grazing and ranch technology such as virtual fence, PastureMap, onX, AgSense, etc.

- Experience with natural cattle programs such as NHTC, BeefCare, Raise Well or similar.

- Record-keeping and comfort with basic spreadsheets

- BQA Certified

- Competent working cattle horseback, on foot, with dogs, and on ATV (we use them all)

- Pasture doctoring background (roping and dart guns)

Other Details

- Full-time seasonal, April through October, based in Gallatin Gateway / Bozeman, MT.

- This can be a year round position for the right person.

- Position will begin April 2027. Intermittent work/training can begin in winter 2026/2027 but not required.

- Housing is not provided, though we will assist in locating nearby housing prior to your arrival.

- Weekend work and on call for cattle and irrigation emergencies

- You will not be alone: ranch crew backup, a summer intern, and an owner who is on site several days a month and reachable when you need help

Compensation Package

$3,750-$4,500/ Month DOE

$1,000/month housing stipend

Work truck provided

Horse pasture for up to two horses
