Description:
We’re looking for an experienced and dedicated horseman or horsewoman to join our small team on a horse ranch in Joshua Tree, California.

You’ll live on-site, work directly alongside our Herd Boss, help care for the herd, guests, and property, lead rides through Joshua Tree National Park, and become an everyday part of building Knob Hill Ranch.

About Knob Hill Ranch

Knob Hill Ranch is a working horse ranch on the edge of Joshua Tree National Park. We specialize in privately guided horseback rides, horsemanship, retreats, and authentic western experiences rooted in the ranch, the horses, and the desert landscape.

Our horses live outdoors 24/7 in small social groups, in large turnouts nestled into the hills. We operate across 16 acres on two properties bordering Joshua Tree National Park, with direct ride-out access to over 250 miles of designated equestrian trails.

We’ve spent the past two years thoughtfully building our horse program, hand-selecting horses from Utah, Wyoming, and Texas with the goal of developing a permanent string of ranch horses that will be with us for years to come.

Philosophically, we aim to move beyond the traditional trail ride. Every ride is an opportunity for guests to better understand both themselves and the horse. We encourage people to slow down, pay attention, and develop an awareness of the subtle communication that exists between horse and rider. We invite guests to listen—to themselves, to the horse, and to the space between the two. Every horse is different, every guest is different, and every ride has the potential to teach something unique.

We emphasize a connection-based approach. Our rides are curated around both the guest’s experience and the horse’s wellbeing—we’re not interested in running horses into the ground. We prefer responsive horses over deadheads, value horses with spirit, and work hard to preserve it.

Our team is intentionally small. We aren’t looking to build a bigger team—we’re looking to build a better one. Every person here has a meaningful impact on the horses, the guests, and the future of the ranch.

The Role

Your primary responsibility will be leading safe, engaging, and educational horseback rides while creating exceptional guest experiences. Like every member of the Knob Hill Ranch team, you’ll also contribute wherever needed to keep the ranch running smoothly.

You’ll take direction from the Herd Boss. While he oversees herd management, horse training, horse selection, and the long-term direction of the horse program, you’ll help execute those standards every day through exceptional horsemanship, horse care, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

Lead privately guided horseback rides ranging from 1 to 5 hours through Joshua Tree National Park.

Share knowledge about our horses, local history, wildlife, ecology, and the surrounding desert landscape to create engaging guest experiences.

Prioritize guest safety while providing confident instruction for riders of all experience levels.

Perform daily herd chores including feeding, catching, tacking, untacking, health monitoring, and general herd management hand in hand with the Herd Boss.

Maintain lodging facilities and ranch infrastructure: through paddock maintenance, tack cleaning, organizing equipment, office organization, landscaping and weeding, fixing fence + other property management odd jobs.

Assist with ranch operations beyond horseback tours when needed, including event setup, guest services, property maintenance, and other operational tasks.

Assist with retreats, clinics, events, guest services, and day-to-day ranch operations.

As with any ranch, this isn’t a typical 8:00–5:00 job – it’s a lifestyle. Working with animals means the unexpected happens, and sometimes more time is required. Our priority will always be the welfare of our horses, and we’re looking for someone who shares that mindset.

What We Are Looking For

5+ years of professional ranch, guest ranch, or equine facility experience. This means you’ve worked at a ranch before. (10+ years of horse experience is ideal.)

Strong horsemanship skills and confidence riding a variety of horses in trail environments.

A solid understanding of horse behavior, herd dynamics, and daily horse care, with proven capability through professional work or your own horses.

Comfortable gathering, ponying, and working horses from horseback. You should be able to catch, halter, saddle, and bridle without assistance, and ride confidently at all gaits on a loose rein.

Physically fit, able to lift 50+ pounds, and willing to work outdoors in all kinds of weather.

Strong work ethic, a teachable mindset, and the ability to work independently while also being part of a small team.

Excellent communication and customer service skills. We spend as much time working with people as we do with horses.

Adaptable, dependable, and willing to pitch in wherever needed.

Bonus experience includes roping, packing, wilderness camping, colt starting, or backcountry travel. As the ranch evolves, we’d love to expand into pack trips and wilderness experiences.

This isn’t a wrangler position on a team of twenty. Our team is intentionally small, which means every person carries real responsibility. We’re looking for someone who takes direction well, thinks critically, communicates proactively, and wants to grow with the ranch over the long term.

If working hard, caring deeply about horses, and helping build a thoughtful horse business sounds like the life you’re looking for, we’d love to hear from you.
