Description:
HP Livestock is seeking a full-time Summer Unit Foreman / Winter Lead Herdsman for a yearling cattle operation based in Burlington and Cody, Wyoming. HP Livestock operates three locations: two near Cody and one in Burlington. This is a seasonal, migratory position with housing provided in both locations with utility costs paid by the ranch.

The right candidate will be hard-working, safety-oriented, handy, eager to learn, and comfortable taking initiative in a fast-growing operation. Our management approach draws on progressive soil, grass, and cattle principles from Bud Williams, Jim Gerrish, Gabe Brown, and others to improve livestock performance and land stewardship. We are looking for someone committed to excellence, constant improvement, and long-term growth with the operation.

Seasonal Work Locations

•Burlington, Wyoming: November to early-April

•Sunlight Basin: Early-April to late October, approximately 50 minutes northwest of Cody

Winter Responsibilities: November–March

•Spend approximately 90% of work time on horseback.

•Ride health on calves in grass traps and identify sickness or other health concerns.

•Stage calves into groups before they are moved into grass traps.

•Work as part of a team to background calves in a pasture setting.

•Assist with heavy equipment operation for infrastructure improvement projects, including fencing, stock water development, pipelines, and ponds.

Summer Responsibilities: April–October

•Take ownership of a large herd of summer yearlings each season.

•Move, gather, and manage yearling cattle on pivot-irrigated meadows in Sunlight Basin.

•Operate and maintain pivots and pumps to grow grass for cattle.

•Assist as needed on rough mountain grazing allotments.

•Develop and carry out grazing rotations.

•Keep accurate cattle records.

•Receive cattle in the spring and ship cattle in the fall.

•Carry out stock water development work.

Requirements

•Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.

•Strong cattle experience, including attention to detail and the ability to identify sickness in cattle.

•Willingness to learn and apply the ranch’s cattle-handling principles.

•Pivot irrigation experience, or the willingness and ability to learn.

•Ability and willingness to live in Burlington during the winter and on the mountain during the summer.

•Ability to move, lift, and maneuver up to 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications and Candidate Fit

•Experience with irrigation systems.

•Ability to use cattle dogs, or willingness to learn.

•Welding and fabrication experience.

•Equipment operating ability, including skid steer, loader, or excavator experience, or willingness to learn.

•This role is best suited for a career-oriented individual who wants to work, learn, and grow with HP Livestock over the long term. The successful candidate should be comfortable taking ownership of cattle, grazing rotations, seasonal relocation, and remote mountain conditions. The summer location includes grizzly bear country, so candidates should be prepared for that environment.

Housing, Equipment and Community

Housing is provided and can accommodate a single person, a married couple, or a family with children. The ranch provides a year-round house in Burlington, with additional housing available in Sunlight Basin. Burlington, Wyoming is a quiet, friendly, family-oriented ranching and farming community with excellent schools. The winter headquarters are located five minutes outside of town. Sunlight Basin is a beautiful mountain valley approximately one hour outside of Cody, Wyoming.

Employees are expected to take excellent care of all Ranch property, including horses, equipment, work buildings, vehicles, and houses. All vehicles, houses, shops, and barns are to be kept clean daily. Ranch equipment and property is to be used according to reasonable standards of care and maintained in good, clean condition.
