Lead Herdsman/virtual fence manager

HP Livestock is looking for a lead herdsman/virtual fence manager for a yearling cattle

operation located in Burlington and Cody Wyoming. HP Livestock has three locations,

two outside of Cody, Wy and one in Burlington, Wy. The position will be nomadic.

Burlington Wy, November to late may. Sunlight basin/Crandall valley (1 hour north west

of Cody) june to late October. In the summer you will be responsible for taking care of a

large herd of yearling cattle on mountain grazing allotments utilizing virtual fence. In the

winter you will work as part of a team to background calves in a pasture setting. HP

Livestock is a rapidly growing ranch operation looking for an individual who is willing

and eager to learn, hard-working, handy, safety-oriented, and a self-starter. This

individual should be able to take initiative as part of a fast-growing operation. Our

operation draws on progressive soil, grass, and cattle management principles from Bud

Williams, Jim Gerrish, Gabe Brown and others to optimize performance. We are looking

for an individual who is focused on excellence and constant improvement. Housing

provided (utility costs paid by ranch). Housing can easily accommodate single or

married persons.

This is a full-time position.





JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: (November-May) 90% horseback work. Ride health on

calves in grass traps. Stage calves into groups to go out into grass traps. Help operate

heavy equipment for infrastructure improvement projects. Infrastructure projects include,

but are not limited to, property fencing, stock water development pipelines, ponds

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: (June- October) take ownership over a large herd of

summer yearlings each season. Moving/gathering/managing yearling cattle on rugged

mountain country utilizing virtual fence. Develop and carry out grazing rotations.

Manage to minimize cattle loss due to grizzly and wolf predation. Keep and maintain

good cattle records. Ship and receive cattle to the mountain. Fix fence on the

mountain. Use technology such as virtual fence collars to manage grass and keep track

of cattle.


REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid Drivers License and be able to be insured.



• Cattle experience is a must. Attention to detail and ability to notice sickness in cattle

• Must be willing to learn new cattle handling principles. Must have pivot irrigation

experience or willingness and ability to learn. Prior experience with irrigation systems is

a strong plus. Must be willing to live in the valley in the winter and on the mountain in

the summer/ early fall. This is a fully migratory position. (good housing is available in

both locations and you will be given a year-round house in Burlington)

Ability to use dogs or willingness to learn. Able to move/lift/maneuver up to 50 lbs.



• Welding/fabrication experience is a very strong plus.
 Equipment operating ability

(Skid steer, Loader, Excavator) or willingness to learn is a plus. We are looking for a

career-oriented individual who is interested in a long-term position. An individual who

wants to work, learn and grow with us. If you are not willing to take ownership of your

cattle/grazing rotation this will not be a good fit for you. You will be around grizzly bears,

if that will make you uncomfortable this may not be a good fit. Burlington, Wyoming is a

quiet and friendly, family-oriented ranching/farming community with fantastic schools.



The operation winter time Headquarters is located 5 minutes out of town. Sunlight

basin is a beautiful mountain valley one hour outside of Cody Wyoming.
