Description:
The IX Ranch located in Big Sandy, MT is a cow/calf and stocker operation that covers over 140,000 acres. There are 6 divisions within the ranch, each working in conjunction with one another. The NL/Bear Paw Springs (BPS) Division Manager position is located along the edge of the Bear Paw Mountains 30 miles SE of Big Sandy and comprises a little over 20,000 acres of deeded, state and private leased lands. BPS is leased by us and is comprised of approximately 10,000 acres of deeded and BLM lease. The ranch receives an average of 13" of moisture per year and typically has snow from December to

March. This is a Chinook region of Montana so snow can come and go throughout the winter months. Temperatures in this region can range from as high as 100 degrees in the summer to -30 degrees in the winter.

The NL position is a team position and will require one member of the team to cook for up to one employee during the springtime usually through calving/branding. After calving/branding there may be one employee in the bunkhouse depending on the summer and fall workload. There are also various times throughout the year that meals will need to be provided for employees. These times would be haying, pregnancy testing, weaning and shipping. The meals are an expense reimbursement, per plate served, and the beef is supplied.

The NL home is a newer, 10 years old manufactured home on a foundation, well kept, four-bedroom home with two bathrooms and a large dining/kitchen area. The fourth bedroom may be used as an office.

Facilities at this location include heated shop/bunkhouse, horse barn/corrals, large calving barn/equipment shed and a set of corrals and a horse

Qualifications:

The NL Division Manager must be able to:

● Learn and adapt to the ever changing ranching environment

● Manage people from all age groups to varying skill levels

● Communicate well with other Division Managers as well as employees and neighbors

● Prioritize and implement daily work schedules and assist in long-range planning

● “Ride for the Brand”

● Calve up to 420 1st cycle running age cows at the NL and up to 220 2nd cycle cows at BPS

● Shoe horses (or be willing to learn and teach others)

● Operate a computer and understand basic computer programs in platforms such as Google Drive, Microsoft One Drive

● Able to start and ride colts and horses and follow IX horse training and employee horse training program

● Address common vehicle, equipment, fence/corral and home/building repairs/issues

Responsibilities:

The NL Division Manager is responsible for wintering up to 1,000 running age cows at the NL and up to 640 cow/calf pairs during the summer months until weaning. The NLDM will be responsible for herd health, NL hay production and managing the hay crew while putting up the hay at the NL. Also manage hay inventories and feeding schedules as well as cattle movement schedules. The NLDM will be responsible for coordinating with DM’s for livestock and other ranch activities as necessary. In addition to maintaining and managing the NL/BPS division livestock, the NLDM will be responsible for over 100 miles of fence and two center pivots as well.

Salary is commensurate with the industry. Employee/family insurance is available after 90 days. Vacation and performance bonus eligibility after one year, SEPP retirement after two years with up to 10% matching. Ranch cell phone, computer and vehicle provided.
