Description:
Position Description:

A full-time ranch hand position is open with Century Cattle Company (CCC), a family-friendly, progressive and growing cattle operation with the goal of developing high-quality cattle and beef, while positively impacting natural resources and wildlife. The beef operations and conservation projects will take place on the Palouse and in the Snake River Breaks.

The main ranch is just west of Almota, WA, along the Snake River. It is known for challenging terrain, mild winters, and high fire hazard during late spring, summer and early fall.

Limited housing is available on the ranch currently. The employee would likely commute, possibly from Colfax (20 miles from ranch HQ), Pullman (25 miles), Moscow (34 miles), or other nearby areas. A ranch vehicle and fuel will be provided to commute to work. Housing on the ranch will become available in time.

Compensation:

• $28-$33 per hour, DOE

• There will be overtime, the amount will depend on the season and a person’s availability.

Benefits:

• Vehicle and fuel to commute to and from ranch and for work purposes

• Health Insurance

• Dental Insurance

• Vision Insurance

• Life Insurance

• AD&D Insurance

• 401K match

• Paid time off

• Paid holidays

• Paid sick leave

• Overtime after 40 hours each week

Summary:

This position would be one of a growing team, supervised by the ranch manager. Routine weekend and holiday chores are shared by everyone, on a rotating basis. Continuing education opportunities will be available. We value experience with other cattle ranches and production systems, but a strong desire to help make the ranch and its operations better and a passion for livestock production and natural resource conservation with less experience will also be attractive.

Responsibilities:

Participation in day-to-day beef operations as well as production events: tasks associated with feeding, calving, vaccinating, branding, weaning, sorting, riding health, and moving cattle will occur in all types of weather.

Assist in implementing proper grazing techniques and pasture/cover crop utilization: helping make timely decisions about livestock moves to achieve animal performance goals and to improve soil and rangeland will be an essential duty.

Other responsibilities:

• operating equipment typically found on ranches and farms

• hauling livestock

• constructing and maintaining corrals and fences of all types

• spraying weeds by all methods

• maintaining and repairing vehicles and equipment

• assisting or leading projects to improve beef cattle operations and natural resource conservation

There will be significant water development for livestock and wildlife purposes, and rehabilitation of the riparian areas. A person in this position will participate in these projects as needed.

Qualifications:

• Two to five years working with beef cattle, ideally comfortable using horses and stock dogs

• A college degree in a field related to livestock production or resource conservation is preferred

• Ability to communicate well and with an open mind

• Professionalism and conscientiousness

• A sincere interest in assisting in proper animal welfare, grazing practices and resource conservation

• Knowledge of Bud Williams’ cattle handling principles, or willingness to learn and practice them

• Clean driving record

• Washington state pesticide license is beneficial

Key competencies:

• A love for getting work done, and striving to do better every day

• An eye for detail and overall awareness

• Self-starting with a cheerful, can-do attitude

• Ability to work effectively alone or with others who have various degrees of experience

• Excellent safety habits, especially around machines and livestock

• Ease around cattle and on horseback and enthusiasm for improving/developing cattle handling and horsemanship skills—low-stress animal handling and proper livestock care will be paramount

• Ability to handle livestock on foot and with machines (how the livestock are handled depends on the task and terrain)

• Flexibility to help when surprises happen and work through weekends, when necessary, such as during calving season

• Ability to take direction, but also solve problems as they arise

• Ability to assist in data collection and record keeping

• Ability and willingness to use hand tools such as shovels, rock bars, post pounders, hammers, malls, sledges, etc., and to lift at least fifty pounds

Willingness to develop these skills is necessary, if applicant does not possess them:

• Knowledge of software applications such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.

• Knowledge of virtual fencing

• Basic metal fabrication and construction skills

• Basic mechanics skills

• Ability to drive a semi-truck

• Ability to artificially inseminate cattle

• Ability to rope in pastures

CCC personal horse and stock dog policy:

The ranch has horses for employees to use. However, ranch employees are allowed to keep two horses at the ranch for use in ranch operations. The ranch will cover worming and vaccinations of these two horses, but footcare is the employee’s responsibility. Employees are encouraged to use well-behaved stock dogs, but no more than two at a time. CCC expects employees to understand and maintain biosecurity to ensure the welfare of livestock and dogs associated with the ranch.

How to apply:

Please send a cover letter detailing how the opportunity would fit your interests and goals, along with a resume to

emaddox@lakeside-capital.com.

If the applicant is deemed a good fit after an initial interview, a visit to the ranch would be arranged. No references will be contacted without informing the applicant first. Any travel costs will be covered by the applicant. However, if the applicant is hired, the costs essential to coming to the ranch would be negotiated.
