This powerful original pencil drawing, Take’n a Spin, is the work of Robert “Shoofly” Shufelt (1935–2019), celebrated as the “Master of the Cowboy Pencil.”



Shufelt trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Illinois, beginning his career in commercial art before dedicating himself fully to Western subjects in the mid-1970s. After relocating to a working cattle ranch in southern Arizona, he lived alongside cowhands — who nicknamed him “Shoofly.” That firsthand experience gave his art its authenticity, capturing ranch life with respect and realism.



Known for his mastery of graphite, Shufelt’s works are striking in their detail, immediacy, and timelessness. His art has been exhibited at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, the Booth Western Art Museum, and resides in prominent private and institutional collections.
