Description:
A rare 80-foot rawhide riata by the legendary California vaquero artist and braider Ernest “Ernie” Morris (1927–2021). Ernie’s braiding and artistry embody the California vaquero tradition—pieces that are as much art as they are functional gear. This exceptionally long riata is a museum-quality example and even retains its original tag written in Ernie Morris’ own handwriting.



Ernie Morris was recognized as one of the most important documenters and craftsmen of the California vaquero tradition. His gear and artwork have been honored at major vaquero shows, displayed in galleries and museums, and collected internationally. He was also an accomplished artist and illustrator, known for works such as El Vaquero, el Buckaroo, Riata Men, and California Cowboy Inventions.



This riata comes from the Joe Nab Trust and includes a signed letter. Joe Nab was the owner of Clark Feed’s and Western Store, the first million-dollar Western store in the United States. He was also a renowned collector of Western memorabilia—particularly bits, spurs, and fine tack—known for his discerning eye and exceptional taste. A significant portion of his collection was sold through High Noon Auctions, but this riata was one of the few treasures deliberately retained, a reflection of its significance.



The riata itself is 80 feet in length, an exceptionally rare size. It has never been used and has always been displayed hanging on a wall since Joe Nab purchased it directly from Ernie.
