Custom Half breed Douglas 38 Wade for your consideration. The saddle is built on a Rick Reed (Double R Saddle) tree- 16” roughout seat, 4” cantle, 93 degree bars, with a 4 1/2" finished mulehide wrapped Guadalajara horn cap. It comes with a set of stainless, laminated lined, monel stirrups with 5” treads. It’s a very deep-seated saddle- properly contoured for a very close contact. The 7/8ths flat-plate rigging has Watt stainless steel hardware throughout.



The Douglas ’38 is a style of saddle tree that Rick Reed was able to develop some years ago. Bob Douglas brought an old Hamley wade to Rick and asked for him to incorporate certain design elements into a new tree. Shortening the fork leg was one of the predominate changes made. It has since become a very popular style among Double R’s regular customers.



What about the materials used and other possible advantages to a Double R Saddle Tree? Use of tulip poplar hardwood for it’s strength and relatively low weight. Once the tree has been constructed, then it is covered in top-grain bull hide, 4-5 millimeters in thickness. Saddle makers and riders alike have acknowledged this successful combination.



One characteristic of the Double R Saddle Tree that has met with much success is the shape of the gullet. A very neat, cone-shaped gullet that has been cleaned out nicely allows it to be lowered in height. This creates a lower center of gravity and puts the saddle, and thus the rider, closer to the animal.
