Job Summary: Join our team at The Dead Shot, a guest-friendly breeding facility where visitors can explore the fascinating world of equine breeding. We are looking for an Equine Specialist/Breeding Assistant with a strong background in equine science and excellent guest service skills. This role involves weaning and handling foals, ensuring the health and well-being of our horses, and providing an exceptional experience for our guests. As a full-scale breeding facility and working Ranch, you will be engaged in all aspects of operations and maintenance.



Key Responsibilities: All points listed below must be demonstrated with a focus on safety.

Safely Handle Mares and Foals: Manage mares and mares with foals during reproductive exams. Assist with breeding procedures (live cover or artificial insemination). Help restrain mares and stallions during breeding.

Assist with Foaling: Support foaling mares, including taking rotating 12-hour shifts to monitor expecting mares. Assist with deliveries and provide postnatal care to mares and foals.

Reproductive Exams: Perform or assist with reproductive exams via ultrasound and reproductive health checks.

Record Keeping: Maintain accurate health and reproduction records for all ranch horses.

Administer Reproductive Drugs: Safely handle and administer reproductive drugs, IM, IV, and SQ.

Collaborate with Professionals: Work with farriers and veterinarians as needed; possess a working knowledge of equine first aid.

Passion for Equine Breeding: Demonstrates a genuine love and enthusiasm for breeding and training horses. Ensuring the highest standards of care and dedication to the breeding program.

Guest Interaction: Professionally interact with guests on the ranch and within the breeding facility.

Facility Maintenance: Help maintain a sterile breeding facility and care for up to 15 stalled mares daily to include stall upkeep and turnout of mares and foals. Weekend and holiday work required during foaling season.

Ranch Operations Management: Oversee and perform diverse ranch responsibilities including pasture and fence maintenance, hay production, clinic assistance, lawncare, snow removal, carpentry, and general ranch upkeep. Ability to operate all types of heavy machinery and snow removal equipment.

Daily Care: Feed and muck stalls daily during foaling season. Assist with and feed individual horses based on nutritional needs. Groom horses daily, including brushing, bathing, and hoof care. Monitor horses for signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes.

Training & Handling: Halter-break foals and assist in early training. Safely handle horses of all temperament and ages. Experience starting colts and riding green broke horses. A commitment to the Natural Horsemanship Methods. Experience hauling horses and driving a truck/trailer.

Driver’s License: Maintain a current and valid driver’s license.

Weaning: Assist with weaning, halter breaking, groundwork, and sales prep of foals.

Trail Rides: Safely guide or assist with trail rides during summer months. Seasoned rider able to handle their own horse while also assisting guests. Help implement training regimens for guest horses.

Team Driving: Learn to handle a team of horses in order to assist with guest wagon and sleigh rides. Familiarity driving a team is a plus.

Knowledgeable Responsibility: Willing to learn the history of the region and our horses to provide a better guest experience.



Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent.



Qualifications:

• Previous experience in equine breeding and reproduction.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on guest services.

• Ability to handle and care for draft horses safely and effectively.

• Capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

• This position requires the ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, stand and walk for extended periods, and perform physically demanding tasks throughout a shift.

• Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.

• Flexibility and ability to adapt to hours of the ranch and breeding cycles.

• Willingness to learn and adapt to new tasks and responsibilities.



Preferred Skills:

• Educational background or Certification in Equine Science, Animal Science, or a related field.

• Experience in a guest-facing role within the equine industry.

• Knowledge of equine nutrition and health care.
