•Our story and history of Australia Cattle Dogs (ACD)

Well, lets me start with all the so-called puppy mills and back yard breeding. I’ve had some great dogs, some registered and some not.

In recent times, the bloodline of the Australian Cattle Dog has really taken a real beating after many years of many great dog breeders trying to achieve breed recognition with AKC for its talent, intelligence and rarity among other dogs. The word heeler is what they were called back in the day and today is still used synonymously with ACD Australian Cattle Dog (When someone uses the word heeler, its apparent to me what they are talking about; the Australian Cattle Dog bred from the wild dingo of Australia. The difference is that horse and cattle folks are just looking for a good dog (typically called a heeler in their world) and generally may not think they need a ‘registered’ dog (called Australian Cattle Dog or ACD), but they couldn’t be more wrong. These beloved beasts are thinkers having to survive in the outback of Australia, they relied on their natural instincts (use the front part of their brains known as the frontal lobe for critical thinking ability). When the American Kennel Club finally recognized this breed for its strength, loyalty, performance and broad abilities, then people began overbreeding them and the genetic quality began to decline. ACD a working breed known for many talents such as herding, tracking, working as cadaver and special needs animals having intuit behavior to read people and apply that skillset to their job. There were many famous breeders such as Bentley that were able to leave their mark on their breed (literally on the head, still known today as the Bentley Mark). Many of these traits is getting washed away through these backyard breeding programs that don’t understand the breed to begin with so they integrate inline breeding and cross breeding. When you hear colors such as lilacs and purple, these are back yard

designer dog descriptions applied to a cattle dog, RUN! These are genetic mutations. If there’s one, more are likely underlying. Every time a breeder does this, they are degrading this dogs strand of DNA that sets them apart while also putting their health at risk. These breeders have no conscience or accountability about the matter. They won’t refund deposits or give health guarantees. They also usually dock the tails; which in the AKC world and in Australia is illegal; it’s considered mutilation. Although, that’s a strong word, studies have shown that dogs with docked tails (mimicking the natural bob-tailed cattle dog fondly known as a ‘stumpy’). They are different in the fact that a docked tailed dog isn’t naturally formed that way. True stumpies are born without a tail. Tail docking is known for creating back arthritis and hip dysplasia. They use the tail as an antenna or feeler to make sure nothing is behind them while focused in another direction. Have you ever heard of the infamous SKIDBOOT (ACD / blue heeler) owned by a horse shoer in TX. named David Hartwig. The Texas recorder did a piece about 16 years ago on this dog and it literally changed my life and the way I raise dogs. The story is a great one and a true one. Video links below. See there many diseases that cattle dogs are predisposed to…deafness, hip and elbow dysplasia, blindness, dentition issues and more. This is why we began doing genetic testing on all of our dogs to strengthen the breed and find the best of the best, such as EXCELLENT medical diagnosis to avoid early crippling and disabilitating diseases of the joints. My dogs have those special hips and elbow x-rays to make sure that it wasn’t inherent in their line before reproducing a substandard pup for someone. We take the pups to Phoenix Neurological Center for Animals and have full hearing tests so that we know and document it’s not deaf or muted hearing. My skill was in the field of Otorhinolaryngology ENT diseases and specialty medicine. I understand how it works and how it’s passed on genetically. Also, We have the cattle dog genetic panel done on Dam and Sire to clear their health records as carriers of other genetic disorders. Then, finally the eye disorders PRCD & RCD4 (simply put, if they have these markers in genes) they may go blind beginning at average of 5 years old. One is a passive blindness and the other is aggressive with a painful nature. All in all, with the testing for all these diseases that are completely preventable; we take measures to insure our dogs don’t carry those markers in their genetic makeup. There a dog breeder in Northern Az and she sold a pup to someone and it dropped dead 2 years old. The owner called me in tears how he lost his pup to a congenital heart disorder caused by poor breeding methods which was all avoidable; with the exception of any environmental hazards. Skidboot had PRCD (although I don’t believe David Hartwig understood that it’s passed on genetically and not recommended to breed him unless you what it takes to do this now). You heard the man say he bred him so that he could have his pups carry on the legacy. Unfortunately, it could take several generations of dogs going blind to finally get it out of the lines. See my genetics chart below. We don’t breed our dams to any other male unless that male is a good genetic match for producing the most healthy pup possible. All these tests and medical care of animals is expensive but my dogs get the very best. I have a minimum of 5,000 average in a litter if we have an c-section and if there’s only two pups, it is what it is. You win some and lose some. Good breeders have to have somewhat of deep pockets to get all this done and done right for the future of the breed to weed some of these diseases out of their lines. Back yard breeders just don’t care, they want the the fast money (low price easy sell). Skid boot was very intelligent! My dogs are intelligent as well. They think, plan and plot. They unlock doors with their mouth, their noses and feet. They are quick learners. They can turn door knobs and walk a door inward and back or pull doors open. I have one she goes to work across the driveway at 9 am and she comes home knocks on door three times at 11 for a nap before husband comes home for lunch. She will go back to work until apex 4 and come home knock on security door. She also goes to bed in the bed at 9 pm nightly. They can turn on TV, Remove the security stick out of slider using body to lean into door until stick falls down then she unlocks the slider and opens door. One dog will lead the younger on by leash and put her in bedroom before she escapes. I have on video. I know these dogs won’t go blind, can hear great and won be crippled up at young age. I know I will have years with this dog. This is why I do the testing to make sure your dog will have a good long life by default if nothing else gets in the way. Below are skid boot videos. We went from wolf owners (super intelligent lupus) to cattle dog owners after my wolf saved me from a fire and several grizzly bears in MT and he finally lost his life when he jumped between me and a 4.5’ AZ Diamondback rattle snake. It was coiled 12’ from my heel and my dog jumped between the snake and me and took the bite and lost his life. We were devastated. Once you see the whole picture including the in depth socialization and potty training that takes place beginning at 4 weeks of age; you can understand the personality difference in a well trained pup and a pup that was raised in a cage just as a dumb animal. It happens, but instead of just disliking it, did something about it and decided to do my part in keeping the breed as healthy as I could therefore, I changed the way I raise dogs. We love them enough to make the change for generations to come. I have several pups

That went on to be champions and grand champions. Even the princess of Dubai has one of my pups. I know I’m doing something right and in the big scheme of things, the little bit more that I charge, can’t compare to the changes that was made in the life of the dog and the human. Less vet bills and more piece has to have a bigger value than throwing all caution to the wind and failing everyone along the way. If you have a question call us.
