The majority of the ranch is located between Meeker and Rangely Colorado. We are predominantly a cow calf operation with Spring and Fall calving herds, and run a small number yearlings as well. We perform 99% of our cow work horse back and take pride in stockmanship and horsemanship that best suits the livestock we care for. We strive always to maintain and improve the health of our grass and soil through managed grazing. The ranch is comprised of desert and mountain country ranging from 5,500 feet on the White River to 10,000 feet in the Flat Top Mountains. The position will start May 1st, based on your availability, and will terminate November 15th. This is a full-time, seasonal position. At the termination of the seasonal position, there may be an opportunity to remain on through the winter, based on performance and ranch needs. You will provide care for a portion of the cowherd, under the supervision of the Ranch Manager, with responsibility for executing the established grazing plan. You will have pasture for up to 5 outside horses. The ranch can provide horses as needed. The following lists duties, requirements and expectations that will outline the seasonal cowboy position: Responsibilities Improve forage base through the movement of livestock on BLM allotments, forest permits, and irrigated pastures using applied methods to maintain soil health Maximize and improve weaning and calving rates by doctoring, branding, calving, and stress-free handling of livestock Care for ranch and personal horses Distribute salt and other mineral and protein supplements Ride through assigned groups of cattle daily during calving, this will include first calf heifers who may need more intensive care Assist in grazing planning according to observation of feed quality and quantity, water availability and the presence of predators and poisonous plants Hauling animals with a pickup and trailer Load cows and calves on semi-trucks in the spring and fall Track and gather cattle in rough country Assist in keeping quarterly counts of cattle and calf numbers Be respectful and timely when interacting with government agencies as requested Assist with fence repair and maintenance of livestock related infrastructure Regularly maintain assigned pickup and trailer, as well as tractors and other heavy equipment on occasion Ranch Maintenance There will be some responsibility for caretaking of your personal house Requirements At least three years of relevant experience Ability to work alone or with a crew and live in a remote setting Ability to work long hours and in inclement weather Knowledge of basic stock handling and ability to rope and doctor cattle outside on pasture or range Ability to shoe the horses in your string is a plus, but not a requirement Stock dogs are an asset on this ranch and a dog, or dogs, with sufficient recall will be allowed Housing Housing will be on the home ranch in the Spring and late Fall Summer housing may consist of a two bedroom cabin in the Flat Top Mountains, the cabin has no electricity or running water besides the sink in the kitchen. Lights, heat and range run off of propane Compensation Salary starts at $2,750 per month, paid every two weeks, any increase will be based on experience. If you are able to furnish 1-5 five horses, then a salary increase can be negotiated. Housing and utilities Pasture, shoeing materials and care for horses, not to include vet for personal horses 1-2 days off per week depending on the time of year. Vacation time.
