Description:
JD Quarter Horses is hiring!

We are looking for a colt starter/Assistant Trainer

We are a small facility located in Lakeview, Oregon. Three and a half hours from Reno and three from Bend, where we focus on breeding & raising quality barrel & roping prospects.

What we are looking for

Someone who is wanting to focus on starting their own business or may already have one but are needing a facility to train out of.

Someone who only wants to focus on a few colts at a time.

We will have an average of 4-6 colts needing to be started every spring, but said person is more than welcome to take in outside horses as long as our colts are the top priority and he or she can manage their time wisely.

Someone with a background in colt breaking/starting.

Would prefer that he or she has worked for a performance horse trainer or a ranch.

A vast amount of knowledge & experience is a must. We have worked very hard to get these babies on the ground and going. The handle that you put on them is very important to us and we are not just looking for anyone.

We will provide

Tiny house with amenities

Insurance

Shared covered arena and round pen

Shared equine therapy products

Teeth, feet, and vaccination services

Shared fifteen horse barn with tack room but you must have your own saddle, rigs, etc.

While we will have the fifteen horse barn available please be mindful that during the spring some stalls will be occupied for foaling mares. We kindly ask that you be mindful of the number of colts you are taking in as we are a small facility and we only have so much room for our horses and outside.

What we ask of you

Keep a good attitude and work ethic to not only represent your business but ours to a high standard. We take our business and name very seriously.

We will not tolerate rude behavior, mistreatment, laziness or drama.

Pick up after yourself and horses, we strive to keep our facility clean.

You have to love what you do, remember that we do this for the horses.

Responsibilities

Said person will be responsible for taking care of any horses that are staying inside the barn, that being colts, broodmares, etc.

This will include, cleaning stalls, administering meds, feeding/graining, and doctoring.

All other horses outside of the barn at the facility will be our responsibility.

You may be asked to prep, load, and unload the trailers.

You may be asked to take turns on foal watch in the spring.

We also run a cow/calf operation away from the facility that stretches from Oregon to Nevada, you may be asked to help at brandings, and gatherings, etc.

A few things to note

This position will be available starting the beginning of 2026.

We are looking for the perfect fit for our business and facility, we will be extremely picky about who gets this position.

We would like to use this first year to get to know said person & their program as well as form a relationship.

After the first year, we will have said person start our two year olds in the spring of 2027.

In the first year we encourage said person to come with outside colts.

We would like for said person to stay and train out of our facility for at least three years.

This position is available to anyone who meets the requirements, and although we do welcome couples, we do not welcome children, so we kindly ask that you be respectful of our decision. The horses must be the top priority.

Please be mindful we can only pay one person and this position is only available to one person.

You will be asked for references & a resume will certainly help.

If you feel as though this is the job for you, please text or call Jordan at (559) 361-6513, we look forward to hearing from you!
