Description:
HP Livestock is looking for a Herdsman. This position is a full time, year-round salaried position that operates in 2 locations. Mid-May to early November on the mountains above Cody Wyoming. Mid-November to mid-May is spent in Burlington, Wy. These locations are about 90 mins apart.

Herdsmen will be responsible for all aspects of calf/yearling cattle care and management on private ranch pastures and mountain forest grazing allotments. 90% of summer work is conducted horseback. ~70% of winter work is done horseback. We are looking for individuals with excellent cattle and horse handling skills who are enthusiastic, hard-working, safety-oriented, and able to take initiative to solve problems and contribute to an efficient cattle operation. The mountain forest grazing allotments are very rough and wild. If you think you will be uncomfortable around grizzly bears this is not the position for you.

This position includes housing paid for by the Ranch, including water, electric, and heating utilities. HP livestock is a growing operation and there is ample opportunity to grow into a leadership position.

SUMMER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Riding to move, check on, and gather yearling cattle grazing on forest grazing allotments and private property.

- Finding bear and wolf kills

- Identifying and doctoring sick cattle.

- Putting out mineral and salt on grazing permits.

- Receiving and shipping cattle at beginning and end of season.

- Minimizing death loss and unaccounted for cattle.

- Fixing water troughs and fencing on Forest Service grazing allotments and private property.

- Caring for horses.

- Assisting with irrigation as needed.

- Building and moving electric fencing for grazing at ranch pastures Keeping barns swept daily at end of day.

- Organizing and cleaning work areas (barns and shops).

- Other tasks that arise in a cattle operation.

WINTER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

- Receive calves

- Work as part of a team to background calves

- Ride for health in pens

- Ride for health in pasture setting

- Check water

- Put out mineral

- Process cattle on arrival and also before turn-out to grass in spring.

- Work on Ranch infrastructure projects when time allows.

REQUIREMENTS:

- Experience with cattle and horses: roping, processing cattle, riding herd.

- Experience with or willingness to learn Bud Williams animal handling techniques.

- Able to work independently or with a team.

- Valid Drivers License.

- Able to move / lift / maneuver up to 50 lbs.

- Willingness to help feed cattle

- Willingness to work on ranch infrastructure projects when we have time.
