Molly Mule

2013 Dun molly mule. 16 hands. 1050 lbs. Out of an Appaloosa mare.

Molly is a very special girl and it is a hard decision to offer her for sale, however I have too many young ones to ride and she needs to find her special person.

Molly was first brought to me as a client mule in 2020. I too possession of her in February of 2023 when the owner decided she was no longer going to be able to ride with her health. She remained with me in training for those 3 years working towards making her a finished bridle mule. I am happy to say that she is almost there! She has been in the 2 rein for a few months and is progressing very well. I suspect she will be able to go straight up with a few more months of work.

Molly is very soft and light to rein, leg and seat aids. For this reason, I am saying that she is only suitable for advanced knowledgeable riders. She has packed a few intermediate riders down the trail, but I wouldn’t recommend that level of rider for her full time.

Molly has a large array of skills to offer her new owner. She guides easily off of just legs and seat at all gates. Big or small circles, serpentines, canter departures, good hard stops, spins and back up, all off just leg and seat aids. She also collects up beautifully and has a natural dressage quality movement. Her trot and canter are very smooth while covering lots of ground. Molly can also sidepass, back arcs, leg yield, haunches in and drag logs. She hobbles, highlines, trailers, good with her feet, stands great to saddle or mount, will pick you up to mount off anything, and has excellent ground manners. She has moved cattle both in an arena setting and out on the range.

Molly also travels in the mountains with all the ease and savvy you would expect from a mule. She has a forward walk that will take you as far as you want to go. Crosses water and any rugged terrain you can imagine. The only time she has ever refused me was when she didn’t like my choice of where to step off a steep hillside to retrieve some cattle. Once I allowed her to choose her own spot she went with no argument. Molly is very watchful of her surroundings but not jumpy.

She has attended a roping clinic and roped a few live cattle as well as the hot heels. This is maybe the area where she is the most lacking the most experience. I have not had too many opportunities to get her roping so she is willing and handles the pressure well but will need seasoning before I would say she is proficient. She has only roped the heel side of live cattle but was willing to drag to the fire and stand an hold calmly through the whole process. She tracks up on cattle well and is quiet and calm while in the herd.

Molly is a great all-around mule that would excel in western dressage, working equitation, or competitive trail. She would also be happy just being an excellent trail mule. She does best when worked consistently but has also had weeks off at a time and was easy to ride and handle.

Molly is highly trained and very sensitive (not in a flighty way, just responsive) so she chooses the people that she likes and will work for. For this reason, her new owner will need to be prepared to spend time getting to know her and letting her get to know them.
