Description:
**Jandal Ranch Hand/Caretaker Duties**

The main responsibility of our Ranch Hand/Caretaker is keeping the ranch in a presentable condition, something you are proud to look at and say “Hey, I made this place look this good!”, and keeping our animals safe and healthy.



This is a job where there is not only always something to do, but there is always something different to do! It requires a person with a multitude of skills. A person that is a self-starter and takes pride in their work. A person who loves animals (dogs, cats, horses, cows, birds and fish) and wants to make sure they are safe and healthy. A person that is organized about their activities, and is constantly looking for a problem and catch it early rather than later.

Here are several examples of the variety of things we will do and keep up on:



**Keep our Horses Legged-up**



Our current remuda consist of a retired quarter horse (very light riding only), 2 younger quarter horses (cattle handling and team roping), two Tennessee Walkers (used for field trialing dogs).



We use natural horsemanship as taught by Carson James. We try to ride each horse 3 times or more per week. I will get you a subscription to Carson James Natural Horsemanship so that you can learn these techniques to help keep our horses tuned up and ready to work! www.CarsonJames.com



We have a well-lighted outdoor roping arena and round pen at house site, and 1150 acres of ranch to ride.



**Mowing**



Riding Mow (Graveley Professional Zero Turn Radius) the house site (around house, armory, barn, equipment shed, kennel)



Weed-eat fence around house site, around all buildings, around trees and front of dog yards

Edge around house driveway, sidewalk to armory, sidewalk from house to kennel (weekly during growing season)



Riding mow Front gate area

Weed-eat around wall and fence at front gate (weekly during growing season)



Riding mow south barn yard

Weed-eat around fence, storage units and equipment sheds at south barn (as needed during growing season – 2 to 3 weeks)



Rifle Range – Mow pistol pit, mow and trim around targets at 100, 300, 500 yards. Mow and trim around berms at 220, 330, 420 550 and 1000 yards (as needed during growing season - monthly)



Picnic Tree and Cowboy Swimming Pool- mow and trim around picnic tree and cowboy swimming pool (as needed during growing season - monthly)



Working Pens – Weed eat around working pens (as needed during growing season - monthly)





**Barn/Workshop**



Sweep outside walls (spider webs, mud-dobber nests, etc.) (as needed)

Clean barn inside stall walls & counter top (often – but only as needed)

Pick stalls and spread fresh shavings (daily when one of the horses is injured and staying in a stall 24/7, every few days otherwise)

Spread picked manure in manure spreader (when cart gets about ˝ full)

Sweep barn aisle and carport (as needed)

Sweep Workshop (as needed)



**Kennel/Mechanical Room**



Sweep outside walls (spider webs, mud-dobber nests, etc) (as needed)

Sweep inside Kennel (as needed)

Clean kennel inside walls & countertop (as needed)

Sweep Mechanical room and Bath (as needed)



**Armory**



Sweep outside walls (spider webs, mud-dobber nests, etc) (as needed)

Sweep front porch and sidewalk (as needed)

Sweep back porch (as needed)



**House**



Sweep outside walls (spider webs, mud-dobber nests, etc) (as needed)

Sweep Front porch (as needed – especially on Fridays)

Sweep Back porch (as needed – especially on Fridays)

Spray flower beds for weeds (as needed)

Sweep garage and keep straight (as needed)



**Equipment Maintenance**



Check oil level and equipment condition of ALL equipment before using!!!!

Hand Wash F-450 (as needed)

Pressure-wash Tractor, 3 RTV’s, 2 ATV’s, mower, horse trailers, flat-bed trailer, etc. (as needed or requested)

Assist or perform maintenance of all equipment (oil changes, etc)



**Spraying**

Prepare batch of Surmount (for prickly pear) or Sendero (for mesquite or juniper) and IPT (individual plant treatment) areas as directed by Dale (growing season only). Spray TEMPO (insecticide) on all exterior walls and equipment (cuts down on mud-dobbers and wasp nest) – monthly during warm months. Spray roundup in flower beds as needed



**Occasional Fence Repair**

We have great fencing tools for repair or building new fence



**Occasional Repairs or projects requiring digging (broken pipe or new project – we have a big ditch witch to handle heavy digging)!**



**Occasional Painting project such as gates, spiral staircase and railing**



**Animal Care**



Put Mineral Blocks with cows and calves, and with Bulls and Steers, as needed

Check hay for horses, help Dale refill as needed with round bale

Help Dale roll out round bales for cow/calves and bulls/steers as needed (colder months or drought during warmer months)

Check Birds for food and water (Quail for dog training)

Check barn cats for food and water

Feed horses breakfast and dinner each day



When Dale and Janice are on the road, feed dogs and horses, feed fish and check the fish pond, check feed/water for quail, and overall check of safety items for our animals (water, food, shelter)



**Other Items** – Collect trash bags and feed sacks from barn, garage, workshop, kennel and mechanical room, and take around to dumpster at south barn.



Assist with cutting, raking, round baling and square baling hay, and harvesting from the field to storage



Service Rodent Traps (put Bait in traps).



Working cattle in the working pens when we work cattle (usually 3 times per year).



Maintain deer feeders with feed when we are running them (5 corn feeders and 4 protein feeders).



We will add more as we work together and find other things that help the ranch!
