Description:
The Lead Cowboy will be responsible for all aspects of the wellbeing of cattle owned or managed by Wilson Cattle Company. Wilson Cattle Company is a sixth generation Cow Calf and Stocker operation based in North Powder, Oregon with winter operations in the Columbia Basin. We pride ourselves in being a leader in the cattle industry when it come to cattle management and execution of practices that ensure the highest performance of the cattle we care for



The Lead Cowboy will report to and work closely with the Operations Manager to achieve the

goals of the business. This involves working closely with the Cattle Boss, cowboys,

administrative staff, customers, trucking operations, and internal partners.



Role and Responsibilities:

• Responsible for the well-being of all cattle owned or managed by Wilson Cattle Company (WCC). This includes ensuring the highest level of cattle handling and animal welfare standards are practiced.

• This position needs to have proficient cowboy skills including, but not limited to, handy a horseback, rope, ride for long stretches, execute pasture moves, identify sick cattle, treat sick cattle, load trucks, unload trucks, sort cattle, weigh up cattle etc.

• Provide input into planning, organizing, and executing pasture moves with final approval

by the Cow Boss.

• Assist in creating and managing all protocols related to your position and be responsible

for documenting the execution of those protocols.

• Will be responsible for flexing between two different operations. April 15 to November

1st in North Powder, OR operation. September 15th to June 1st in the circle’s operation in the Columbia Basin. These dates will vary year to year. The circles season will have you living in company housing in Boardman, OR with other WCC employees. This could range from a couple days to two week stretches.

• Lead and assist with all activities related to cattle health including identifying sick cattle and providing appropriate treatment.

• With the oversight of the Cow Boss you will develop schedules and timing of branding, weening, receiving and shipping yearlings.

• In close conjunction with the Farm Manager and Cow Boss you will be responsible for maintenance of equipment, fences, buildings, and infrastructure of operations.

• Regular communication with office staff by phone, email and in person.

• Regular attendance and involvement with crew safety meetings and other training including chute side and pasture tracking software.

• Provide regular upkeep and maintenance of housing, barns, and other outbuildings you use related to your company housing.

• Be timely to all daily meetings to ensure a clear plan is established for the day.

• Involvement and oversight of all cattle programs that cattle are enrolled in and ensure accurate recording keeping of the cattle in the programs.

• Work with cattle and pasture software programs to ensure accurate records are maintained.

• With approval by the Operations manager purchase of supplies necessary to perform all job duties for you and your crew.



Preferred Qualifications and Requirements

• Must be a self-starter with a strong work ethic and the ability to prioritize workload to ensure timely issue resolution.

• Must have three well broke horses in which you are able to safely perform all aspects of a ranching job.

• Must be an experienced cattleman and horseman with the ability to perform all duties in a efficient manner while demonstrating the highest regard for animal welfare and your own safety.

• Mindset to work in a collaborative team environment and desire to grow the talent in those you lead while displaying a high level of humility.

• Must be able to stretch, be progressive with technology and new ideas.

• A medium level of computer proficiency and ability to learn new cattle & pasture software and programs.

• Willingness to travel and be away from home in the late fall, winter, and early spring.

• Must have an acceptable driving record for insurance purposes.
