He may be big and stout, but he is old man gentle and broke the way one should be, and has done every job there is to do on the ranch. Commander is that once in a lifetime type horse, the kind that does not come up for sale very often. He is a true all around horse that can and will do anything you ask of him. Commander is a stout 16 year old gelding, 16hh and close to 1300 pounds with a big hip, wide chest, deep girth and long, thick mane and tail. When he fully sheds out he is going to be covered in beautiful dapples. But don’t let his age fool you, he has always had the best of care and has no injuries, swelling, or scars, and easily has another 10 or more years of riding left. He is AQHA registered as “Me Bone Holder” # 4356090, and traces back to Driftwood, Poco Bueno and Hancock. No horse is perfect, but he is pretty close. He has spent the majority of his life on a ranch out in West Texas, where he was used for all phases of ranch work, including sorting pairs, roping and doctoring cattle in the pasture, and checking fence. Commander was the foreman’s horse, and the only reason he came up for sale is the man was no longer able to get on a horse of this size. We have ponied colts off of him and they can literally climb all over him and it won’t bother him. Commander is stout, tough, and could pull a house down if you asked him to. He is strong to the horn and good on the end of a rope, never getting excited or upset when working cattle. He will watch a cow and is excellent sorting pairs. He would be the perfect horse for a part time rancher that wants a safe horse he can hop on and work cattle on the weekends. He has also carried the flag in grand entries and the noise, lights and chaos don’t bother him one bit. But Commander also enjoys just a leisurely ride down the trails and would be perfectly content as someone’s trail horse and best friend. He is laid back and quiet, yet responsive, rides on a loose rein and will adjust himself to the level of his rider. He will not take advantage of a less experienced rider and will step up his game for someone who really knows what they are doing. Commander is broke to death with an excellent one handed neck rein, and will spin, slide to a stop, do beautiful rollbacks and work off your leg. He will sidepass and work a gate and has wonderfully smooth gaits that are easy to sit to. He rides more like a small horse than one his size. Commander is a pleasure to ride out in the pasture, crosses water with no problem, and isn’t spooky. He can be ridden out by himself or with other horses, and doesn’t mind being separated from the group. He has also been ridden alongside the road and in traffic and isn’t bothered by it. We have hauled him all over and he is always the same quiet horse everywhere we take him. Commander has good ground manners, stands quietly tied, gets along great with other horses, will load in any type of trailer you ask him to, and saddles and bridles easily.
