Doctoring: Horses Room And Board: A Must Phone#: 2544590681 click to view fullsize image Description: I began working with horses as an intern at Dakota Performance Horse in Kadoka, South Dakota, a Reined Cow Horse training facility owned and operated by Levi Grimes. There, I learned how to work safely and efficiently around horses. I worked there from February to September 2014. Duties included: *Graining, haying, watering *Cleaning stalls *Catching horses to be brought in to saddle *Saddling/Unsaddling *Grooming/washing *Exercising older show horses *Traveling to shows Levi’s dad runs 250 cows on a ranch next door, so I was also lucky enough to get to help gather, sort cows, go to brandings, take part in putting CIDR’s in, checking on cows, etc. I got to help this past calving season, during the blizzards, to bring in calves that needed warmed/bottle fed. From Levi’s I went to work as a loper for a Cutting horse trainer, JB McLamb, whom I still work for. *****I have given JB notice and will continue to work for him through the Super Stakes, which goes until April 19****** Duties include: *Saddling/unsaddling horses *Gathering cows every morning to be worked *Getting horses rode down and ready to be worked *Turning back *Traveling to shows *Getting horses ready to show *Doctoring and daily care of the horses *Treating (electromagnetic pulse treatment) *Tracking of supplies/medications for the barn *Taking care of any of the oddball things that come with running a barn. (Loading, unloading trailer, looking after equipment, keeping up the organization of the tack stalls and storage rooms) I am able to drive a pickup and trailer (standard or automatic) and do have experience driving our smaller tractor around to put out hay for cows. I recently halter broke two little weanlings that we have, but that is my only experience with that. I have ridden younger horses (our two yo out in the pasture and in town when we take them to shows) I would love to find a place that I can work with horses, while also getting to learn about ranch life, as that is the area that I want to continue in. My long-term goal is to learn how to run a ranch/care for cattle, so I can go on to do it myself. Will relocate to a place that provides housing. I do not have any pets.
