We are looking for dedicated, humble, gritty individuals wanting to improve their expertise in low stress stockmanship, horsemanship, wilderness living, regenerative ranching practices, and rangeland ecology. The Ranch: 1650 acres of pasture and headquarters, and 70 square miles of steep rugged backcountry rangeland. It is one of the largest certified organic areas in the country. We have been producing grass fed beef for over 27 years, and we are passionate about regenerating the wild landscapes we steward while producing exceptional beef for human health. The Project: Conservation range riders will be a part of teams that will rotate into backcountry cow camps for 4-8 days at a time in an innovative grazing paradigm we call “inherding.” Crews will implement the objectives of coexisting with predators, restoring fish and wildlife habitat, increasing carbon sequestration in soils, and maximizing nutritional diversity for grazing cattle. Riders will spend up to 16 hours a day horseback, herding about 400 head of cattle with other crew members and a few border collies. The landscape is beautiful, rugged, and changeable. Cow camps are minimalistic but adequate. Riders may also get experience processing cattle prior to turnout, maintaining tack and equipment, horse care and training (based on experience), rangeland monitoring, and moving backcountry camps. The Person: Our best range riders are tough, hardworking, resilient people who don’t take themselves too seriously. If you work well with others, are not afraid to get dirty, know how to take responsibility, and have a passion for learning about stewarding animals and landscapes, this position is for you. Many of our riders have not been around livestock or ranched before, and so we do not require experience with horses, cattle, ranching, or higher education (although these will be considered). Range riders will be prepared for the summer’s work with a series of intensive, hands-on trainings at the beginning of the season, and will continue to be mentored by crew bosses the duration of the position.
