We stand a couple of our own stallions, run a broodmare band, raise the foals until they are 2 and get them going under saddle. We also buy prospects to put some time on. Most of our horses are started with Ranch Horse Versatility events in mind, with a few cutters, reined cow horses, or rope horses along the way. We feed out cattle and sell meat direct to customers. We host events and clinics (some taught by us, some by guests). We are an all hands on deck sort of place, everyone helps with all the chores. Job is 6 days a week, one full weekend off each month. Hours are whatever it takes to get the job done, and vary based on weather. Duties would include (but not limited to) Helping feed/water horses and cattle Helping clean stalls (on barn help days off) Helping with grooming horses Helping with pictures and videos of sale horses Getting colts started on the ground as well as under saddle Assist in hosting events and clinics Assist with all aspects of the breeding program (breeding, foaling, weaning, halter breaking, etc) You’ll have at least 4 head to ride/ work all the time, probably more in the long run as this position is designed to allow us to expand our training operation. There would be opportunity to show horses, as well as be part of clinics hosted by outside trainers. Lots of learning opportunities! We need someone who can and will put groundwork on these colts. Our clients are mostly non-pro/ amateur/ weekend warriors and they need horses that are easy to handle. Lead, load, tie, bathe, pick up feet, not spooky or watchy, and decent to catch. Also, you need to be able to get on, keep them quiet, get them moving out and ready to learn something. Looking for a colt starter, not a bronc stomper! We can train the right person for a lot of this, but mostly need someone who already is capable of managing the first couple of weeks with a colt. Good hands, good seat, and ability to take direction are a must! References and riding videos required with application. If you don’t have anyone to take a video, roll up a splint boot, prop your phone on a barrel, and try to stay in frame. Compensation: $200/ per week (to start) $100/per week additional for each outside/client horse 10% of sales on horses you ride 1 stall, includes hay, feed, shavings (can use for personal horse or sales prospect) Living quarters (efficiency/1 person size, power included, fully furnished) Beef, pork, and/or eggs each week (For those who need the math done for you, that’s $2,500 in taxable value per month, excluding any sales commission) A dog is fine, as long as it’s ok with horses, goats, chickens, other dogs, strange people, etc. We are in Sallisaw, OK.
