Newt’s Story

Newt Weddle was born October 1, 2016. During his first twelve months of life, Newt was a very healthy and happy infant. Not long after Newt’s first birthday, he contracted an intestinal virus that led to E. coli 0157. A small percentage of people with this infection develop Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), and Newt fell into this category causing increased complications to his diagnosis. Within a few days, his brain and kidneys were showered with blood clots. The result of these blood clots led to kidney failure along with damage to areas within Newt’s brain and eyesight.

Newt spent three months at the Children’s Hospital in Ft. Worth, TX where he slowly began to recover. With the help of dialysis, his kidney function returned to normal and he became strong enough to leave the hospital. Since leaving the hospital, Newt has continued to be a fighter by undergoing intense therapy to awaken his brain function and muscular movement.

Proving many of his doctors wrong, at 23 months of age Newt was able to gain enough strength to sit on his own for short periods of time and roll over from his back to his stomach. With these small, although monumental, successes for Newt, he continued to have setbacks with his health that have landed him back in the hospital on nearly a monthly basis. Finally, on August 30th, an abnormality in his large intestine was discovered. Newt and his parents were hopeful that this diagnosis would help relieve Newt of his recurring intestinal issues.

A three-hour surgical procedure was able to remove the damaged parts of Newt’s intestine, but post-surgery has not been easy. Although the surgery was successful, Newt’s recovery has been a long process as he has battled an infection, high fevers, a collapsed lung and temporary heart issues. That’s more than most handle in a lifetime, but Newt proves repeatedly what a fighter and strong-willed kid he is.

Not only is Newt a fighter, but so are his parents. Cameron and Laci’s determination to make sure Newt has the best care is evident. Newt couldn’t have a better team of advocates to be by his side. It has taken countless hours of therapy, that are non-traditional and not covered by the family’s health insurance, to get Newt where he is now both neurologically and physically. Once Newt recovers from his latest surgery, proven therapy efforts will resume.

Cameron and Laci live five hours from Dallas, where the therapy is being done on a daily basis. While Cameron stays at home to work, Laci spends much of the week in Dallas to get Newt to his various therapy appointments. As Cameron and Laci dedicate their lives to Newt’s health and healing, living expenses and treatments are costly.

Proceeds will aid the family in covering the cost of therapies and living expenses for Laci and Newt while in Dallas.
