If you are looking for an honest, safe, dependable gelding to ride on the ranch or on trails, then take a look at Sonny. He is absolutely one of the best older horses we have had in a long time! Sonny is gentle for absolutely anyone and stays that way even if not ridden regularly, and he will not take advantage of his rider. He will adjust himself to the level of his rider, gentle for beginners but will step it up so even more experienced riders will enjoy him. Sonny is an 18 year old chestnut gelding, but don’t let his age scare you, he has plenty of life left and enjoys moving out when asked. He is big boy at 16.1 hh, but he rides like a smaller horse with slow, smooth gaits that are easy to sit to. In his prime Sonny was one heck of a horse. He carries the brand of the Hawkins Ranch out of Seguin, Texas, who is known for breeding quality horses. Sonny started out as a cutting horse, then transitioned into a ranch horse, and later into a kids horse. He has done a little bit of everything, from ranch work, trail riding, carrying the flag in the grand entries to running barrels and poles in playdays. Sonny has a fantastic one handed neck rein, so light that even a small child can easily neck rein him around. He has been ridden English, western and bareback. He would be the perfect horse for a young cowboy who wanted to help his dad or granddad around the ranch, a weekend rancher who wanted a horse to check fence and push cattle, or a lady who wanted a safe horse to trail ride with her friends on the weekends. Sonny has never offered to buck or rear, and is the type of horse you can let sit for weeks or months and then just hop on without having to worry about getting bucked off. He is a pleasure to ride out in the pasture, crosses water with no problem, and isn’t spooky. He has been taught to travel out and cover some ground, and has nice smooth gaits. Sonny is good on both leads, will sidepass, and work a gate perfectly. He has excellent ground manners, is easy to catch, load, haul and shoe, and stands quietly tied. He can be ridden out by himself or with other horses, will easily lead or follow, and doesn’t mind being separated from the group. Sonny has also been ridden alongside the road and in traffic and isn’t bothered by it. He was turned out for over a year before we bought him so he needs to gain a little bit of weight, but we have floated his teeth and wormed him and he has been steadily gaining weight.
