Duke is the type of horse every cowboy dreams of owning. He is so broke and cowy and has been ridden so many miles working cattle that he can pretty much do it all himself when it comes to ranch work. They just aren’t making horses like this anymore. Duke is 15 years old, 15.3hh and until recently has been the foreman’s main horse. He has been used extensively in ranch rodeos as well as for all phases of ranch work, including roping, gathering, and doctoring cattle in the pasture, sorting pairs and dragging calves to the fire. He is strong to the horn and will get down and really work a cow. Duke has an excellent one handed neck rein, will spin a hole in the ground and slide to a stop, do nice rollbacks and never gaps his mouth or pops his tail. He has smooth gaits, is good on both leads, will sidepass, work off your leg, and work a gate. Duke is a pleasure to ride out in the pasture, crosses water with no problem, and isn’t spooky. He rides quietly on a loose rein, content to walk all day long if that is what you prefer, but is responsive and will easily step into a trot or lope when asked. Duke can be ridden by himself or with other horses, will happily lead or follow and doesn’t mind being separated from the group. He has been ridden down the road and in traffic and isn’t bothered by it. Duke has absolutely no buck, rear, bite, kick or other bad habits, but he is definitely a cowboys horse in that he is a little watchy on the ground. On his back he is great, but needs to be handled on the ground by an experienced horseperson and not a child or beginner. Duke stands quietly tied, and is easy to catch, load, haul and shoe. He is not 100% sound but he still enjoys being ridden and can still perform any job you ask him to. He has some arthritis that causes him to short step at a walk, but does not show any signs of lameness at a trot. $2000. Call for more information: Wendy at 210-363-1883 or Aubrey at 830-377-7236.
