It is marked Cates and 824. Mr. Cates was posthumously honored by the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum with the Chester A. Reynolds Award for his contribution to the preservation of the legacy of the American West. He is listed in both spur books by Ned and Jody Martin. We have not seen this style of bit by Jerry before. It is steel with a natural patina and is mounted with nickel silver. There is one piece of silver missing and a ding in one of the conchos. Both are noted in close up pictures. There is some minor rust build up on the steel. It is not bent, broken, or repaired. This would be a nice bit to use or to add to a collection.
