Billings, MT. Lead Off cowboy position open for an experienced and skilled person with leadership skills. Position reports directly to General Manager/Owner. Must be able to ride and rope well and execute a plan that you make with the general manager. Must be able to effectively manage people by earning their respect so they will naturally follow you. Excellent communication skills are required. Horseback work 90%+ of the time. Lots of big country and lots of cattle and certain times a year there is lots of hours. As Lead Off – you are expected to be one of the best in your field – not just telling people what to do but showing them and leading them. Animal health knowledge is required however there is an intensive health protocol that is governed by veterinarians that must be championed by you. You are responsible for the well-being of all the cattle and horses while keeping them where they belong. Your crew is responsible for all outside fence maintenance while other crews help support bigger projects and new construction. This position is an awesome opportunity for an aggressive person who likes a TEAM environment and knows how to be a TEAM leader. Endless growth opportunities for the right person. You will be evaluated on cattle performance, inventory management, plan execution, efficiency, costs and how well you can manage a TEAM. We will endlessly discuss the goals with you. Then you will be part of the planning process – what tools, how many men, what camps, how should the schedule be organized or whatever needs discussed to make the best situation for the men, cattle and horses while achieving the goal. You and your crew will be asked to gather and sort out big country; trail large herds, timely/accurately pair out large numbers in spring; rope and tag calves; brand (rope and drag); train horses; calve hfrs (outside and barn); be accountable for head counts, individual treatment records and drugs used; ride heat; work out dries; outside health; feedlot health; sort cattle outside and in feedlot; manage body condition; execute protocols; report condition of feed and water and work with GM on meeting market needs.

This fourth-generation family operation is a large diversified ranch that includes 3 ranches(2000+cows/4000++ yearlings), several farms, and a feedlot(6000+). We have an excellent crew but we are trying grow and need more focused assistance as we grow numbers and acres. We believe technology is the future. All cattle are individually managed through Electronical ID. We conduct extensive AI programs and other breeding programs that require a lot of sorting as our livestock are marketed into many different programs throughout the year. You need to be able to be trained with EID readers and Animal Health software (you will have help). Our bred cattle are sold into Angus female markets and our feeder cattle finish into high end meat markets. Detailed treatment records and BQA training/certification is a must!!
