Room & Board: Included Phone #: 620-214-0629 click to view fullsize image Description: P5 Ranch is located between Lakin and Syracuse Kansas along and south of the Arkansas River. The ranch will turn out yearling steers and heifers on native grass and irrigated triticale pastures. The ranch also maintains a small angus based commercial cow herd. Cattle work is done almost exclusively horseback; prowling, moving, shipping, etc. The ranch implements a rotational grazing system. No farming or putting up hay of any kind. Responsibilities: • During grazing seasons, this person will have their own part of the ranch or country and groups of cattle to tend to and look after. • Health - Follow vaccination protocols, doctoring and diagnosing of sick cattle. • Nutrition – Monitoring quality and quantity of forage supplies in pastures being grazed, and rested, checking, and maintaining adequate mineral, making sure cattle have access to adequate water, feeding supplement protein when needed. • Maintenance - Maintain all ranch infrastructure, trucks, equipment, fences, water systems, etc. • Construction - Fences, pens, water systems, etc. • Communication - Communicate with manager and co-workers. Skills/Experiences needed: • Verbal and written communication skills. • Good organizational and analytical skills. • Ability to work independently or in a team setting. • Self-starter, the ability to problem solve. • Experience with handling yearlings. • Good horsemanship. • Must be able to rope, also need to be able to rope and load a yearling in a trailer alone if it is required. Working knowledge of animal husbandry, and general ranch veterinary skills. • Experience in gathering large pastures, and large groups of yearlings. • Background and knowledge of fencing, welding, plumbing, carpentry, and light mechanical abilities.
