Description:
Registered Quarter Horse, 16.2 hands, beautifully built with a regal head, kind eye, and legs that go forever. Stunning dappled grulla color with the dark blue dun dorsal stripe, tiger striped legs, and smokey shoulder bars. “Little Wimpy Aledo” is as foundation bred as they come, going back to Poco Bueno and the original Wimpy. He is 100% broke to ride for ranch work and fancy broke for the arena. He spins a hole in the dirt on the forehand or hock, side passes, and has a big stop. He is fun to ride and easy to get along with; you don’t have to be a professional horseman to operate this guy. His is eager to please, quick and willing, and a fast learner. He has been used for every kind of ranch work, and has covered trails in all kinds of terrain and weather. He’s fine with dogs, goats, cars. With his work ethic, he can keep being an excellent ranch horse. With his looks and training, he could excel in Western pleasure or even Western dressage or reining. And with his size and leggy build, I could even see him being trained as a jumper.

Here’s the story: I just bought this horse 2 weeks ago at a performance horse auction associated with the Dixie National Quarter Horse Show. I bought him sight unseen (I know, I know, I don’t need a lecture), and the long story short is that he’s just not the right fit for my family. Here’s my honest assessment: he’s gorgeous, but bigger than I thought he’d be, and too big for me to pony my kids around on their little ponies. He’s got a ton of miles, but I get the feeling he’s “cowboy trained,” meaning he waits attentively for your next command and desperately wants to please you by doing exactly what you ask. The downside is that he doesn’t have any of the touchy-feely groundwork under him, so while he’s quick and operates off a light touch, he tends to be a little “reactive” as opposed to “responsive,” which is a distinction that makes him a little touchy, especially when I’m trying to juggle a horse, two kids, their horses, the excited dog, and all the chaos that is my life. He’s a little look-y on the ground; under saddle he buckles down and gets the job done, but when not in hand, he is jumpy and nervous. He’s a little face-shy, but stands to be groomed and saddled, lifts his feet politely, and loads nicely. I took him to a trainer for a basic evaluation. She remarked several times that he is very willing to please and obviously a really quick learner, and she thinks that with a little work he’ll be an incredible horse in every regard, but she acknowledges that it’ll take some patience and trust work to get his emotional development to catch up to all the great physical skills he has. I don’t have the time or the patience to be the person to take him to that level. But if you do, or you like a cowboy-broke hard-working horse, then come out and take a look.
