If you are looking for a safe, solid ranch gelding, one who has been there, done that and will always take care of you, then take a look at Shadow. His kind do not come up for sale very often, one you can pull out a few times a month to go do a job on but also safe enough to let the older kids or guests ride and know they will be safe. He sells as grade and we do not know how he is bred. Shadow has been on one ranch in New Mexico most of his life, used primarily by the foreman as his main mount. He has always been ridden by a good cowboy and he is broke the way one is supposed to be. Shadow is a true black gelding, 15.1 hh and nicely built with a good foot and plenty of bone. He is 14 years old and has always had the best care, so he is sound, healthy, and perfectly able to do a days work.

Shadow is a pleasure to ride out in the pasture, crosses water with no problem, and isn’t spooky. He rides on a loose rein and really knows how to travels out in the pasture. He has been used for all phases of ranch work, including sorting pairs, roping and doctoring cattle in the pasture, ponying colts and dragging calves. Shadow is strong to the horn and good on the end of a rope. He is quick footed and excellent in the sorting pen, and would be a great teacher for someone wanting to learn how to rope or sort. He is an excellent ranch horse but would be just as content spending the rest of his days as a pleasure horse, packing his new owner around on the trails. Shadow has an excellent handle and a soft mouth, will sidepass, work a gate, and is good on both leads. He ground ties the best and will stay put all day long if you want him to. He can be ridden out by himself or with other horses, will happily lead or follow, and doesn’t mind being separated from the group. Shadow has also been ridden alongside the road and in traffic and isn’t bothered by it. Shadow is a ranch horse, not a pet, respectful but slightly standoffish on the ground, and not one to want to nuzzle or beg for treats.
