The Assistant Site Manager is responsible for the maintenance and repairs to the site and facilities (including the historic house museum and education center), stewardship of the site, and livestock care and feeding. The Assistant Site Manager will work closely with the Site Manager to maintain the site and with other staff members to coordinate event, facility rental, and education program needs.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Open and close the site and facilities for daily use

Repair and maintain site and facilities (e.g. regular lawn watering, mowing, window washing, change light-bulbs, etc.)

Caring for and feeding livestock on site

Maintain Four Mile Historic Park tools and equipment

Maintain site records, inspection reports, and other facility-related data

Provide security for FMHP by responding to security system alarms

Support efforts of other staff, including on-site events and activities (e.g. hanging signage, arranging movement of large equipment for programs, providing janitorial services, making available equipment and furnishings needed for on-site events and activities, supervising assigned volunteers during events, etc.)

Serve as point of contact for community service workers and other contractors

Supervise stewardship volunteers in on-site projects that maximize conditions for events and activities

Other duties and related work as assigned


Ability to perform basic carpentry, electrical and plumbing work in order to maintain site and facilities.

Superior organizational and communication skills, both internal and external, clearly and positively communicating with co-workers, volunteers, visitors, subcontractors, partners, and others

Feels comfortable working closely with large animals.

Adaptability is a must.

Exhibits an interest in committing to the Four Mile team for an extended employment.

Ability to work with diverse community members and professionals in a positive, objective manner.

Skills in operating and maintaining a variety of machinery and tools

Creative problem solving skills are expected

Familiarity and ability to work efficiently with electronic devices, including computers, telephones, 2-way radios, and power tools

Self-motivation is a crucial component.

Displays an interest in history and the story of the west.

Have the capacity to handle many and varied details simultaneously.

Willingness to work a varying schedule.

Applicants must pass a criminal background check.


Hours are generally Friday - Sunday with some evening and holiday hours required

Ability to work independently and on multiple projects

Feels comfortable with heights

Ability to lift objects up to 60 lbs.

Can endure spurts of intense physical activity, e.g., loading/unloading hay bails

Must be able to operate appropriate vehicles and equipment in order to provide the above described duties

Physical abilities to reach, twist, bend and lift are required

The work is often physical and will include a range of conditions at a 12-acre property with multiple facilities. Some use of herbicides will be necessary. Longer hours are common during the summer months as more on-site events and activities are scheduled and visitors are more frequent.
