Welcome to the Ranchers Quarter Horse Breeders Association

RQHBA was formed in 2000 when a group of South Dakota Quarter Horses Breeders met to formulate a plan to market their foals. It was an informal meeting over a dining room table that launched the association. Originally the group focused on just the counties of Butte, Meade and Lawrence in SD but soon grew to include ranches from all over the Tri-State Area.

Our Annual Sale is held the 4th Sunday of August and features select foals from member ranches and invited saddle horses. We also feature a Yearling Futurity and a Two and Three Year old Ranch Horse Futurity. Make your plans to come join us for the day in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.

Make Your Plans to Join Us for a Day of Futurities, Weanling Showcase and Sale Preview.

Yearling Futurity:
7:30 am

Weanlings sold through the previous year RQHBA sale are eligible to show in the Don Brunner Memorial Yearling Futurity, held during the RQHBA Showcase and Sale. Purse divided per stallion, gelding and mare divisions.  Futurity is for yearlings only.   To be eligible, the yearling must have sold as a foal through the previous years RQHBA Showcase Sale; eligibility will follow the horse.

Winnings will be awarded to the registered owner at time of futurity.  Original papers are to be presented for show registration to verify ownership.  Showing expenses are the owner’s responsibility (entry fees, stall, etc.).  Payout will be 60% for 1st place, 30% for 2nd place and 10% for 3rd place.  RQHBA members and weanling consignors are not eligible to compete for the futurity funds.

Ranch Horse Futurity:
8:00 am

Any horse purchased through the RQHBA sale that turned 2 or 3 years old in 2022 can compete for cash in the RQHBA Ranch Horse Futurity.  In addition to Futurity Dollars, all entry fees are added to each age pot!  Mares, geldings and stallions can compete against others in their age division for $500 per class, plus all entry fees will be added to each ages pot.  Entry fees are $75 due by August 1st.

First place in each class wins 60% of the pot, second place wins 30% of the pot and third place wins 10% of the pot.  Winners in each age division receive a buckle sponsored by Tri-State Livestock News.

Weanling Showcase & Sale:
9:00 am

All horses sold at the RQHBA Sale are inspected for quality. The sale horses are vet checked by a veterinarian when they are Coggins tested. They are then inspected by a screening committee and sale veterinarian on sale day.  All foals sold in the sale will have AQHA 5 Panel test for both sire and dam (HYPP, GBED, HERDA, PSSM1, MH). Those results of the 5 Panel test for both sire and dam will be posted at the sale.

Riding horses must have been owned for at least one year and will be previewed before the sale.  All horses are available for inspection at the respective ranches anytime prior to sale day. Know that all horses in the sale are selected from a larger group and each ranch has more at home like the ones that are represented at the sale.
